leader in business-to-business wholesale today formally announced the market entry with its first wholesale Centre at Ludhiana in Punjab. An announcement to this effect was made by the Managing Director of METRO Cash & Carry India Mr. Rajeev Bakshi who led a team of senior officials from METRO to apprise the Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Prakash Singh Badal of the market entry at Ludhiana, marking the beginning of METRO’s activities in Punjab in a meeting here at Chief Minister's residence this afternoon.
Mr. Bakshi informed the Chief Minister that the first wholesale center of METRO Cash & Carry India in Punjab was slated to be operational at Ludhiana during the latter half of 2011. This would be the company’s fifth city and seventh wholesale center in India. This is also in continuation to the MoU signed by the Company with the Punjab Government in 2008. He also said that the company had already planned to open such wholesale centres at Amritsar, Jalandhar, Zirakpur and Patiala in a phased manner. He also pointed out that the company was seriously contemplating to open another wholesale centre at Bathinda to source the local produce of farmers especially the Kinnow fruit and a sub centre at Malerkotla for vegetables. The company currently operates a total of six wholesale centres including two each in Bangalore and Hyderabad and one each in Mumbai and Kolkata.

Taking part in the deliberations the Chief Minister asked Mr. Bakshi to open a facility for imparting training for our youth in retailing and logistics and assured him of fulsome support and cooperation for the purpose. He also impressed upon Mr. Bakshi to start training programme for the farmers to motivate them to produce the best quality fruits & vegetables meeting their marketing norms for which he agreed to launch such training programme for the benefit of the farming community. Mr. Badal also asked the METRO Group to open its wholesale sub-centres at Hoshiarpur and Moga in vicinity of its upcoming wholesale centres in Jalandhar and Ludhiana to boost the trading & commercial activity in the region.
Responding to the demand for opening sub-centres and the training centres for imparting training to the youth and farmers, Mr. Bakshi said that he would explore the possibility after working out the detailed modalities so that these proposals put forth by Mr. Badal could be materialised. Mr. Bakshi further said that Punjab was characterized by a rapidly growing economy, progressive outlook and modern infrastructure. “We are convinced that our unique business-to-business wholesale concept will be well-accepted by our business customers here and will be beneficial to the local producers and the overall economy of the State.” said Rajeev Bakshi. “We are extremely appreciative of the Government of Punjab for supporting our business initiatives in the state. METRO will make an investment of over Rs. 60 crores per wholesale center in the State of Punjab”, he added. METRO Cash & Carry provides job opportunities for the youth and also creates direct linkages with the farmers for sourcing local produce. With this, METRO re-iterates its commitment in the growth and progress of Punjab.
METRO Cash & Carry entered the Indian market in 2003. It caters exclusively to professional business customers like hotels, restaurants, small retailers like kirana stores and offices. The assortment and services are tailored to meet the special needs of these target groups.
The company also works closely with local producers, suppliers, small and medium enterprises, co-operatives and self-help groups to source its products, as it sources a large part of its products locally. Moreover, each wholesale center creates 250 direct and 100 indirect job opportunities for the local citizens.
